Sustainable Farms Pilot Project Launched

Projet pilote Fermes durables : vous avez répondu à l’appel !

The Sustainable Farms pilot project got underway in the summer and the first round of focus groups for the animal welfare component were held in July. Participants had the opportunity to share their thoughts on Agropur’s vision, the data they had been asked to provide, and explain why they wanted to be involved in this initiative.

Their reasons for participating were varied. Some said they hoped Sustainable Farms would facilitate communication with fellow members, allowing for exchanges on different practices on animal welfare. It would also provide opportunities to become inspired by learning what is working well for others.

The pilot project launch in the spring was a success. More than 90 members volunteered to take part. Of these, 29 have been selected to participate in the animal welfare component and 20 have been selected for the environment component, which will start soon. Participants are from Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

Many members said it was important to participate in the pilot project because they want to better understand business partner and consumer demands. Our cooperative members consider it essential to be proactive and contribute to the positive discourse regarding dairy production.

Keep in mind that Sustainable Farms is a way for us to improve our exchanges with members regarding their animal welfare and the environment improvements and performance. We want to implement a program that we can use to demonstrate their actions to our business partners and customers. In parallel, Agropur maintains the importance of forging partnerships with industry stakeholders who are also actively involved in sustainability.

We will regularly communicate insights gathered during the pilot project and continue to promote member efforts.

Thank you to all who volunteered to participate!
