The Eggnog, a Traditional Drink to Discover or Rediscover

Eggnog by Agropur Brands

Are you one of those for whom the holiday season wouldn't be complete without a good eggnog? This creamy, comforting drink, with its aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg, is a true symbol of conviviality and warmth.

An ancestral tradition

Eggnog is much more than a simple winter treat. It's an age-old tradition that spans generations and cultures.

Although historians don't agree on its exact origins, the most common story is that eggnog has its roots in medieval England, where a drink called “posset” was popular. Composed of warm milk, ale or wine, and spices, this mixture was considered a tonic to treat flu, fevers and colds.

In the 13th century, the more fortunate began to add eggs to this drink, making it more nourishing. The addition of more luxurious ingredients such as eggs, nutmeg and cinnamon transformed eggnog from a medicinal remedy to a drink reserved for special occasions. It was also around this time that the term “eggnog” was coined, combining the words “egg” and “nog” (the wooden cup in which this mixture was served).

Expansion in North America

Eggnog crossed the Atlantic in the 18th century with the British colonists. When they arrived in Canada and the United States, they replaced wine with Caribbean rum, a more accessible and less expensive alcohol. This adaptation made eggnog particularly popular during winter celebrations.

Over the years, eggnog has become an emblematic holiday drink in North America. In the 1960s, dairies began to market ready-to-serve eggnog, further enhancing its popularity. Today, eggnog is enjoyed in many forms, including alcohol-free versions and modern recipes.
