Benefits of lactose
Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk that provides energy and a variety of other health benefits.
- Lactose increases the absorption of certain minerals including calcium, magnesium and zinc.
- Its impact is minimal on tooth decay compared to other sugars.
- It has a relatively low glycemic index, which could make this sugar beneficial for diabetics.
- Lactose contributes to a healthy intestinal flora. It stimulates the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. It also inhibits pathogenic bacteria.
What causes lactose intolerance?
During digestion, an intestinal enzyme known as lactase breaks down lactose into the simple sugars, glucose and galactose, for absorption into the bloodstream. Most people produce enough lactase at birth and during childhood to digest the usual amounts of lactose in the diet. However, some people have lower levels of intestinal lactase as they age. This can lead to poor digestion of lactose.
